Lawyer petitions Lagos State House of Assembly over enactment of law for prohibition of bullying

A lawyer, Adefemi Yekinni, has sent a petition to the Lagos State House of Assembly on the need for the enactment of a law for the prohibition of bullying and protection of school children against reckless driving.
In the petition addressed to the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Mudashiru Obasa, yesterday, Adefemi Yekinni, said ” After witnessing how a reckless driver killed several school children at Ojodu Berger, and how the life of Sylvester (Jnr) Oromoni was stolen from him by bullies, my heart is shattered beyond measure, and I cannot even imagine the pain and anguish that the parents of these children are witnessing now. ”
Yekini, who is also a law lecturer at the Lagos State University, in the petition, said the deaths of those students are a national tragedy and shouldn’t be treated with kid gloves.
“Bullying in our schools and drivers driving recklessly in school areas are gradually becoming a pandemic in our society today.
“Many Nations of the world are beginning to make laws that specifically prohibit bullying in schools, and in most countries in the west, speed limits are reduced in school areas, with enough signs warning drivers to drive with care and watch out for students crossing.
” In line with this, I’m humbly petitioning your office to put into motion the process for the enactment of a special law that will prohibit bullying in our schools and protect our school children from reckless driving.
” I’m willing to offer my help in any way whatsoever to ensure that a bill to this regard is put forward to the House.
He added “Mr. Speaker, the world is watching how we respond to these unfortunate and avoidable incidents, and these issues cannot be swept under the rug. Please treat urgently for the sake of our school children, who are our future.”
