No fewer than three shops located at Gbade Plaza, Nnamdi Azikwe street, Balogun, Lagos Island has been gutted by fire on Thursday.
Crime and Court News gathered that the fire outbreak occured at about 5am before it was put out by a combined efforts of the Federal and state fire services.
Eye witnesses’ account said the shops were among the 56 shops of a three-storey building in Gbode Plaza where leather material are being sold.
An eye witness Ikechukwu Odum said the inferno started from the ground floor and affected the shops. In his words, “my brother, Nnamdi called and told me about the incident but on getting there, it has been contained,” he said.
The incident was confirmed by the Acting Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Lagos State Territorial District, Ibrahim Farinloye who said it was completely put out at about 7am saying, “No life was lost to the incident and nobody sustained injuries, ”
At press time, the cause of the inferno could not be ascertained.
Similarlly, Mrs Adeseye Margaret,
Director Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said the fire was met well alight, The Fire which involved only three shops at the ground floor from among 56 shops in the three storey plaza was met well alight and extinguished from escalating to adjoining structures in the bostorious Lagos market.
“It is on record that the Fire has completely been put out at 0740 hours with a combined efforts of the Federal Fire Service as investigation into the cause is ongoing while no casualty was recorded.” She added.
