Counsel to Dr Rahman Adedoyin, Mr Williams Abiodun has demanded the arrest and investigation of a journalist, Hamzat Oriyomi, for allegedly attempting to incite the public against the police and deliberately misinforming the public over the death of Adegoke Timothy, OAU’s postgraduate student.
Crime and Court News gathered that Adedoyin has been in police detention over the death of Adegoke who died in the Hilton Hotel and Resort, Ile-Ife and his body was allegedly dumped on the roadside allegedly by Adedoyin’s son, Raheem.
Abiodun in a letter addressed to the Osun Commissioner of Police, Olawale Olokode dated December 10, 2021 and made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Monday, stated that diligent investigation into the activities of Oriyomi could reveal insider collaborator within the police force.
“Our client has been in the custody of the Police for almost a month without any access to the media or any form of news agency to correct the negative and false information which Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat continues to feed the members of the public about the incidence under investigation.
“Any reasonable person can only imagine the level of damage that Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat’s defamatory conducts has done to the reputation of our client and the institutions he established.
“We are of the opinion that if Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat’s phone number and call logs are subjected to diligent investigation, the identity or identities of some of your men that are sabotaging your commendable efforts, in this case, may be revealed.
“We humbly demand that Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat be invited, questioned and possibly criminal charges filed against him for defamation, character assassination, cyberbullying, misinformation and inciting the public against the police authority in a manner that may derail police investigations and cause perversion of the course of justice”, it reads.
